Objective

The Sir Walter Junior Rifle Club is organized to promote safety and rifle marksmanship.

Participants

Boys and girls ages 10 to 20 are encouraged to participate in the junior rifle program.

Cost

The annual dues are $50.00 per year, plus a nominal entry fee for matches. The junior club meets once a month, March through October.

Schedule

Junior Rifle Safety Class is held each February and is based on the National Rifle Association’s First Steps Rifle Course. This course is a requirement for all junior shooters who have not previously taken the class.

The Junior Rifle Program meets at 9 A.M. on the second Saturday of each month, March through October. The October meeting is the end of year club match and awards picnic, open to active Junior Rifle Program participants only.

Program

The Junior Rifle program is based on the National Rifle Association’s 4-Position Smallbore Rifle Qualification program. The shooting positions include prone, sitting, kneeling, and standing.

Awards

Awards are presented to the junior shooter as he/she completes the different levels of the qualification program. The awards range from the Basic Practical through Pro-Marksman, Marksman, Sharpshooter, Expert and Distinguished Expert.

Equipment

The Sir Walter Junior Rifle Club provides all of the equipment needed for a junior shooter to get started in the qualification program, including rifles, shooting jackets, shooting mats, gloves, slings, eye protection, ear protection, targets, and ammunition. There is no additional charge for the use of the Club equipment. Each junior is encouraged to eventually obtain their own personal eye and ear protection that they find to be most comfortable for them.

Instructors

National Rifle Association certified instructors and coaches will be present at each scheduled Junior Club meeting to assist and coach juniors in their selected shooting program. NRA certified Range Safety Officers supervise the operation of the firing range at all times.

Frequently Asked Questions

Carolina Academy of Precision Shooters

Carolina Academy of Precision Shooters (CAPS) promotes the shooting sports through training and regular competition. CAPS is the advanced division of SWGC Junior Rifle. All participating juniors must start their journey with the Junior Rifle Safety Class and the program's normal monthly training sessions. Upon the recommendation of the coaches and the demonstrated desire to progress in Olympic/NCAA style 3-position rifle, a junior can advance to CAPS where they have access to additional personalized training and competitive opportunities.
